CNN —The idea of coming face to face with a spider-like creature unexpectedly is enough to fill any arachnophobe with horror, let alone encountering one with large, spiky legs. The newly discovered long-extinct species is described as a “large spider-like arachnid” with “distinctive large spines on the legs” by the study’s authors. They were unable to place the creature within any known arachnid order due to the specimen’s lack of mouthparts, which scientists use to classify them. “You see sort of spiny legs in some arachnids, but we’ve never seen one that really has these big spines all the way along, at least the first parts of the legs. Scientists think the spiny legs were for defensive purposes.

Researchers divided the data from the children into three groups based on the amount of ultraprocessed food they ate. “This particular topic, ultraprocessed food consumptions and risk, is a very important topic in kids,” he said. The ultraprocessed foods kids eat now may have lasting impacts, a new study suggests. In places where fresh food might be harder to obtain, ultraprocessed foods are more accessible and inexpensive, Freeman said.

Pro-Palestinian protesters stormed the Institute of Politics building at the University of Chicago on Friday afternoon, overturning furniture, damaging property and confronting the institute’s director, former Senator Heidi Heitkamp. She refused their demand that she leave her office, university officials said, adding that she was the only staff member in the building. In a statement, the protest group on Friday said that it had occupied the building to protest the University of Chicago’s ties to Israel. Bystander video showed protesters climbing through second-floor windows to leave the building as the crowd below cheered. After demonstrators were cleared from the building by the police, other protesters remained outside and in yards nearby, chanting, yelling and pounding drums.

Blum turned to programs mostly in states where abortion access — and, by extension, abortion training — is likely to remain protected, like California, Colorado, and New Mexico. CNN —The Biden administration plans to speed up court cases for some recently arrived migrants who are seeking asylum, marking the latest move to address arrivals at the US-Mexico border, according to senior administration officials. The Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department announced Thursday a new court docket targeting migrants who have unlawfully crossed the US southern border. Cases can often take years because of an immigration court backlog, prompting the effort to set up a process intended to expeditiously work through cases. The immigration court backlog exceeds 3 million pending cases, according to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse or TRAC, which tracks immigration court data. “We’ve identified judges who have availability to manage to do these and manage along with all the existing work that they’re doing,” the senior administration official said.

New York CNN —When new gross domestic product figures last month showed US economic growth slowed from recent gangbuster levels, many people diagnosed the economy as having a really ugly sickness: stagflation. So March’s ugly inflation report, which showed an unexpected jump in the pace of price increases, and the lackluster GDP report, made the diagnosis seem like a no-brainer. Even JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said last month the US economy “looks more like the 1970s than we’ve seen before” and that stagflation is a growing risk. Economic slack, a term I unfortunately cannot take any credit for, broadly describes a situation where the economy isn’t performing as well as it could be. The most widely recognized symptom of economic slack is a rising unemployment rate.

New York CNN —Uber wants to make it cheaper to get a ride to the airport, concerts or sporting events. The rideshare company on Wednesday announced the launch of Uber Shuttle, an offering that will let users book up to five seats in a shuttle from a central location to an event or the airport – for less than the cost of a regular Uber ride. The cost of the shuttle rides won’t be affected by surge pricing, a common affliction when lots of people are looking for rides at the same time. Uber has previously rolled out early shuttle tests, including in India, and as an offering for corporate customers. Uber Shuttle will let riders book up to five seats in a shuttle to the airport or a concert or sporting event, for less than the cost of a regular Uber ride.

Clues from dinosaur eggshells and bones have suggested that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded and others were not. CNN —The Atlanta Hawks will be selecting first in the 2024 NBA Draft after winning the Draft Lottery conducted at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago on Sunday. Atlanta had a 3% chance at landing the top pick after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference this season with 36-46 record. The Hawks have never had the first pick since the NBA moved to a Draft Lottery in 1985. The Washington Wizards, who were tied with the Detroit Pistons for the highest odds to land the top pick at 14%, will have the second pick.
